Does CBD Lower Blood Pressure?

Some research has shown that CBD and CBD products may have some surprising benefits related to pain relief, sleep improvements, inflammation reduction, and more. However, does CBD lower blood pressure, as well? Current evidence suggests that it might.

What is CBD?

CBD is a phytocannabinoid that forms one of the 113 currently identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants. It accounts for around 40% of the plant’s extract and is legal here in Texas and other states, as long as it has 0.3% THC or below.

Many online and bricks-and-mortar establishments stock various CBD products for humans and animals alike, such as oils, vape oils, lotions, balms, and even gummies. You can even purchase CBD oil for use in food recipes.

Benefits of CBD

While many scientific studies are still in their infancy, the rate of research is ramping up. This is in response to the tens of thousands of people who currently use CBD products to assist with a wide variety of ailments.

Pain Relief

Current research shows that it may reduce chronic pain by impacting your endocannabinoid receptor activity. This reduces inflammation and interaction with neurotransmitters.

Anxiety & Depression

However, CBD oil is also showing promise in treating anxiety and depression – which are typically treated with pharmaceutical drugs. Not only do these often come with side effects, but prescribed medications like benzodiazepines can lead to substance abuse due to being addictive.

And that’s where CBD oil comes in. Studies involving small groups found that a dosage of CBD could reduce anxiety during a test. In contrast, a placebo had no effect. In animal studies, it produced anti-depressant-like effects.

Acne Reduction

Those seeking relief from acne may also see the value in CBD. A test tube study discovered that CBD oil prevented sebaceous gland cells from producing excess sebum secretion. Given that many people use it as an anti-inflammatory, these properties may also help.

Does CBD Lower Blood Pressure?

As more studies are carried out, people are experiencing new benefits of using CBD oil left, right, and center. A randomized crossover study in 2017 determined that just one dose of CBD could reduce resting blood pressure and the blood pressure response to stress.

Nine healthy male volunteers received a 600mg dosage of CBD or a placebo. Their cardiovascular parameters were then monitored using a laser Doppler and finometer. The results were undeniable.

The CBD reduced the resting systolic BP and stroke volume with increased heart rate and maintained cardiac output.

Those who had taken CBD also had lower BP before and after stress. These results shine a light on the prospect that CBD could have genuine anxiolytic and analgesic effects.

Surprisingly, this study also determined that CBD affected cardiac perimeters – but without direct cardiovascular effects. However, it may still be a while yet before we know if CBD is a valid treatment option for cardiovascular disorders such as hypertension.

Can I use CBD to Fix Hypertension?

Hypertension is essentially high blood pressure. Blood is pumped through your blood vessels at a particular degree of force. High blood pressure can cause damage to the walls of your blood vessels, arteries, and veins.

It can also lead to cardiovascular problems like heart attack, heart disease, stroke, aneurysm, and even heart failure.

If your doctor has diagnosed you with hypertension, CBD oil may be a suitable option for managing some of the problems. However, it’s in your best interest to consult a doctor on their recommended treatment options.

These can include reducing your stress and salt intake, exercising regularly, eating more fruits and vegetables, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol. Some doctors also prescribe medication, but many come with side effects.

As a result, it can be worth asking your doctor whether CBD oil instead of some prescription medications could be a worthwhile option. If they advise against it, it’s essential to follow your doctor’s recommendations and consider other methods for reducing your blood pressure.
